Rev. Arnold Townsend was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1943. After living in Oklahoma, he and his family moved to Los Angeles at the age of six. After playing baseball in college he was drafted by the army and stationed in Korea. He returned to California, commuting between San Francisco and Los Angeles for six months before staying in the Fillmore and starting studies at San Francisco State University. A member of the Black Student Union (BSU), Townsend was highly involved in the fight against redevelopment agencies in the Fillmore. Today he continues preaching in San Francisco and at times in other cities.
